Houston Sculptor To Attend Symposium
With 1976 only partially completed, Houston sculptor Tom Sayre has already participated in six exhibitions in Texas this year. Sayre will also be one of the participating sculptors in the International Sculpture Symposium to be held in Liberty Hill between October 11th and November 30th.
During the Symposium, Sayre will be working on a welded steel sculpture. The finished sculpture will become part of a sculpture park in Liberty Hill. For the six week Symposium, he will be living with a local family.
The shows that he exhibited in this year include the Beaumont Biennial, Beaumont Art Museum; Southwest Tarrant County Annual, Ft. Worth Art Museum and Houston Assistance League Competitive Exhibition in Houston. He also exhibited in the Corpus Christi Art Foundation Annual, Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi; Invitational Sculpture Fair at Commonwealth National Bank,Dallas and Gulf Coast Invitational Sculpture Exhibition in Galveston.
In 1967 Sayre received his B.S. from the Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, Missouri, where he later taught for six years. He received his Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Oklahoma in 1969.
He has received awards which include the Alumni Development Fund Award from the University of Oklahoma, “Technology and the Artist Craftsman” from the Octagon Gallery in Ames, Iowa and “National Sculpture 74” from the McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee. In 1973, he was the artist -in-residence at Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, Iowa.
He has exhibited in shows in Oklahoma, Illinois, Missouri Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Minnesota and Texas. Drawings of his landscape sculpture were included in
traveling exhibit sponsored by the Missouri State Arts Council.
